GATSBY

I’m seeing the Great Gatsby tonight for the second time. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. I remember when I read it, I fell in love with it. I read it so many times in high school, it was almost sad. When I found out Leonardo DiCaprio was going to be in the movie, I was ecstatic. Honestly he is such a good actor, the first time they show him in the movie, the look on his face is priceless. I really enjoyed the movie and tonight I’m seeing it at the drive-in. It’s gonna be so much fun! I haven’t had a lot of time lately to be with my friends so I’m really looking forward to this! Just my friends, a great movie, and good times. I need this. I’ve been doing a lot lately. I can’t even believe it when I look at my planner. I can’t wait until summer. I just want to to be working and having fun again. Orientation is the best thing ever, I’m really excited. The best thing about it, is the relationships. The first time I watched the Great Gatsby was with my team, and even though my friend fell asleep it was still such a great time.

The Ramblings of Enrique.: The Field Assignment

That’s a cool story idea! I wouldn’t have thought of that. I wish we had a football team so we would have even more school spirit! That would be a really interesting story to read because of the opposing viewpoints!

enriquecervantes:

The field assignment is one of those assignments that excites me and scares me at the same time. After I did my first field assignment in Reporting I, I was able to see my writing skills grow more. For this assignment, I wanted to focus on something that I found really enjoyable. I chose to do a…

Volunteering!

I wrote my field assignment on how Cal Poly Pomona students volunteered at the compton iniative a few weeks ago.

I had a really hard time getting a story this time. Everything I wanted to write about, fizzled out. So when I finally heard about the Compton Initiative program, I was pretty excited.

It’s a really cool organization that helps all kinds of places like homes, churches, medical clinics and other places that need help. It’s a 40 year plan to restore Compton.

The NRHH is the organization that told the students about Compton Iniative.Dakota Robarge, the president of the National Residential Hall Honarary, was really ecstatic about the whole thing and was really nice answering all of my questions. He even invited me to help out while I tagged along. I painted a fence with a few other girls and it was really fun.

I definitely want to go again. It’s a quarterly trip, and mostly all of the projects are done by the afternoon. However, everyone meets at 6am. I woke up at 5:30 and I was exhausted. But I definitely do think it was worth it.

I must say, I hadn’t really volunteered in a while and it made me feel really good to see others doing it. Even though they were college students, and it was a Saturday morning, they were still out there at 6am.

I did some research on it, and  saw that the number of student volunteers is declining. While I was talking to students, a lot of them told me that time and lack of information are the biggest reasons why they don’t volunteer as much.

Dakota was telling me that it’s challenging to get students involved, as he tried to promote it as much as he can.

I know that I want to get back into volunteering. It made me feel so great afterwards! The family that lived in the house was there too watching, and you could see how happy they were.

I hope more students try to get involved! Also, if anyone wants to get involved or doesn’t know how, www.dosomething.org is a really awesome website to see different options!
